Teachers practiced techniques that motivate children to ask questions, think independently, observe carefully, and draw conclusions—strengthening curiosity and reasoning.

C) Integration of Art, Movement & Storytelling

The training placed strong emphasis on using:

  • Storytelling to develop imagination, listening skills, values, and language
  • Music and movement to enhance rhythm, motor coordination, and self-expression
  • Hands-on learning to help children build conceptual clarity through touching, building, sorting, grouping, and experimenting
  • Role-play and dramatization to develop confidence and social understanding

D) Hands-on Engagement for Teachers

One of the most impactful elements of the workshop was the practical participation of teachers. They engaged in classroom simulation activities that showed:

  • How to introduce concepts by connecting them to real-life scenarios
  • How to use everyday objects for fun, meaningful learning
  • How to manage transitions, routines, and classroom spaces effectively
  • How to use positive reinforcement to motivate young children

These interactive sessions enabled teachers to experience learning from a child’s point of view, helping them design better classroom experiences.

  1. Teacher Training Workshop on Phonetic Awareness

Date: 18 November 2025
Resource Person: Mrs. Shalini, Oxford Advantage
Theme: Strengthening Pre-Reading Skills Through Phonetic Awareness

A highly informative and interactive Teacher Training Workshop on Phonetic Awareness was conducted on 18 November 2025 for the educators of Platinum Jubilee School and Jr. College. The session was facilitated by Mrs. Shalini from Oxford Advantage, who delivered an engaging and insightful training designed to enhance teachers’ understanding of early literacy development.

Focus of the Training

The session began with a clear explanation of the difference between Phonics and Phonetic Awareness, a distinction crucial for every early-years educator:

  • Phonetic Awareness focuses on listening skills — identifying, manipulating, and segmenting individual sounds in spoken words.
  • Phonics focuses on linking sounds to written letters.

This clarity helped teachers better understand the sequential development of reading skills and the importance of strengthening auditory recognition before written decoding.

  1. Key Skills Covered in the Workshop

Teachers were introduced to practical strategies for building phonetic awareness in young learners. Major components included:

  1. Rhyming Skills

Training on how to help children recognize and produce rhyming words, an essential early literacy skill that builds sound sensitivity.

  1. Sound Blending

Teachers practiced activities that guide children in blending individual sounds to form complete words — a core skill for reading fluency.

  1. Phoneme Segmentation

Educators learned methods to help children break words into smaller sound units, strengthening both reading and spelling skills.

Mrs. Shalini demonstrated classroom-friendly activities, using stories, auditory games, picture cues, and sound cards to make sessions more engaging.

Importance and Impact of Phonetic Awareness

The training emphasized that phonetic awareness is a vital pre-reading skill, forming the foundation for a child’s literacy journey. With systematic training, children can:

  • Decode (read) new words confidently
  • Encode (spell) with accuracy
  • Build a strong conceptual base for Phonics
  • Transition smoothly from beginner reading level to Level 2
  • Develop long-term reading fluency and comprehension

Overall Outcome

The workshop equipped teachers with:

  • Practical tools for assessment
  • Classroom techniques for early sound awareness
  • Activity-based strategies for structured literacy development
  • A deeper understanding of early reading milestones

The newly acquired strategies will significantly benefit students by strengthening their ability to identify, understand, and manipulate sounds in words—skills that are critical for accelerated reading progress.
